Provide First Aid Assessment Online and Practical Assessment
This course is for participants who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. This course will provide participants with the ability to recognise basic signs and symptoms of various illnesses and injury and subsequent provision of appropriate treatment or assistance. The course focus includes CPR, treatment of common medical conditions, and situation recognition and management.
Participants are required to complete the online learning prior to attending a 4-hour practical assessment.

- This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. This course will provide participants with the ability to recognise basic signs and symptoms of various illnesses and injury and subsequent provision of appropriate treatment or assistance. The course focus includes CPR, treatment of common medical conditions, and situation recognition and management.

Assessment activity 1: Manage an unconscious breathing casualty.
Manage in line with ARC Guidelines, the unconscious breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise (Recover Position from face down and from laying on their backs)
Assessment activity 2: Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.
Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. Demonstrating the following techniques:
- Check for potential dangers.
- Check for response and normal breathing.
- Recognise abnormal breathing.
- Send for help.
- Open and clearing of the airway.
- Using correct hand location.
- Using correct compression rate and depth in line with ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilation.
- Follow single rescuer procedure.
- Follow the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock.
- Demonstrate a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions.
- Hand over to emergency services
- Provide an accurate verbal incident report.
- Review the incident and participate in a debrief.
Assessment activity 3: Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.
Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. Demonstrating the following techniques:
- Check for potential dangers.
- Check for response and normal breathing.
- Recognise abnormal breathing.
- Send for help.
- Open and clearing of the airway.
- Using correct hand location.
- Using correct compression rate and depth in line with ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilation.
- Follow single rescuer procedure.
Assessment activity 4: Apply First aid procedure for non-life-threatening bleeding.
demonstrate effective bleeding control for a minor bleed. Demonstrating the following techniques:
- Use standard precautions

- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for bleeding control
- Follow ARC guidelines for cleaning and dressing the minor wound
- Administer effective aftercare

- Use standard precautions
- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment of a nosebleed
- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 6: Apply First aid procedure for the management of shock.
Demonstrate effective treatment of a casualty suffering from shock. Demonstrating the following techniques:
- Use standard precautions
- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment of shock
- Use safe manual handling techniques
- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 7: Apply First aid procedure for the management of Asthma.
Demonstrate the effective treatment of a casualty suffering an asthma attack. Demonstrating the following techniques

- Gain consent from casualty

- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 8: Apply First aid procedure for the management of choking and airway obstruction on both an Adult and Child casualty. Demonstrate the following techniques:
Adult partial obstruction
- Use standard precautions
- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment of airway obstruction (partial)
- Administer effective aftercare
Adult complete airway obstruction
- Use standard precautions
- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment of airway obstruction (complete)
- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 9: Apply First aid procedure for the management of anaphylaxis
Demonstrate the effective treatment of a casualty suffering from anaphylaxis.

- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment for anaphylaxis
- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 10: Apply First aid procedure for the management of fractures, sprains and strains and slings
Demonstrate the effective treatment for fractures, sprains, strains, and slings
A) Demonstrate the following techniques:
- Collar and Cuff Sling
- Elevation Sling
B) Demonstrate the effective treatment of a casualty with a sprained ankle
Demonstrate the following techniques:
- Use standard precautions
- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment for sprained ankle
- Administer effective aftercare
C) Demonstrate effective treatment for a casualty with a closed fracture middle forearm (radius) (arm sling)
Demonstrate the following techniques:

- Apply DRSABCD
- Gain consent from casualty
- Follow ARC Guidelines for treatment for closed fracture
- Administer effective aftercare
Assessment activity 11: Apply First aid procedure for the management of envenomation
Demonstrate effective application of pressure immobilization technique.

Assessment activity 12: Scenario
Respond to at least one simulated first aid incident, where no previous knowledge of the casualty’s condition will be known prior and start treatment including:
- Identifying the casualty’s illness or injury through history, signs, and symptoms
- Using Personal protective equipment
- Provide appropriate first aid treatment
- Convey incident details to emergency services or advising casualty on any post incident actions
Assessment activity 13: Incident Reports
- Provide an accurate verbal and written report of the incident
- Participate in a debrief
Assessment activity 14: Theory Assessment
Completion of online learning modules. All modules must be completed to be assessed as competent in this assessment task
