Pool Lifeguard Update**
The Pool Lifeguard update course is designed to renew the level of skills, knowledge, fitness & judgment of a qualified pool lifeguard.
Participants attending this course must have a current Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard and First Aid qualifications. A copy of these qualifications will be required to be submitted to the Training Manager prior to attending the course.
First aid qualifications requirements:
First aid (HLTAID011 or HLTAID012) must have been completed within the last 3 years.
Resuscitation (HLTAID009) must have been completed within the last 12 months.

Assessment activity 1: Oxygen Equipment Activity
Complete an Oxygen Equipment Checklist to demonstrate the following:
- Dismantling
- Discarding disposal components
- Cleaning and decontamination
- Checking and diagnosing faults
- Safe storage
Assessment activity 2: Oxygen Therapy Scenario
Administer oxygen therapy to one conscious casualty who requires oxygen therapy including;
- Assessing level of consciousness, vital signs of respiration and pulse
- Select and prepare oxygen equipment
- Ensuring the environment is free of hazards
- Administer oxygen safely at correct flow rate
- Manage an equipment malfunction
Assessment activity 3: Child CPR using oxygen equipment Scenario
Using recognised techniques administer CPR, incorporating supplemental oxygen with Bag-Valve-Mask, to a child manikin placed on the floor including:
- At least, 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR
- At least, 2 minutes of Bag-Value-Mask oxygen resuscitation and 2 minutes compressions
- Respond in the event of vomiting or regurgitation
- Place unconscious, breathing casualty into recovery position
- Use oxygen equipment appropriately
- Hand over to emergency service personnel

Demonstrate effective use of hand signals to communication with other lifeguards.

Demonstrate effective communication skills to communicate with patrons and aquatic activity leaders to resolve the following situations and clarify safety rules:
- Unsafe patron behaviour
- Breaches of safety rules by patrons
- Difficulty of at-risk persons

Assessment activity 6: Facility Analysis Activity
Perform a facility analysis identifying current and emerging environmental and site hazards and ways to adapt supervision when present including:
- Unfavourable weather conditions for outdoor areas
- Reflective glare
- Unclear and turbulent water
- Busy sites involving multiple stimuli and visually cluttered scenes
- Quiet sites involving minimal stimuli and monotonous scenes
- Scanning points
- Surveillance zones

- Identify any immediate hazards.
- Determine appropriate rescue method.
- Determine appropriate rescue equipment and effectively utilise rescue equipment suited to the type of rescue.
- Alert appropriate personnel and call for assistance.
- Communicate effectively with the rescuee, providing clear and concise instructions to the person being rescued.
- Identify and promptly respond to hazards and rescuee conditions that arise during the rescue.
- Remove the person from water safely, efficiently and engaging assistance when available and required.
- Demonstrate fitness and strength throughout the rescue.

Assessment activity 11: Timed Tow
- An unconscious, breathing person is 50-metres from safety. Enter the water, swim a 50-metre approach, and tow the person 50-metres to safety. The participant will commence the rescue wearing swimwear, trousers and long-sleeved shirt, any of which may be discarded as desired. A time limit of 3 minutes and 15 seconds shall apply from the starting signal until the completion of the tow.

Respond to and reach a person in distress in the swimming pool within 30 seconds.

Working in teams of two lifeguards, secure an unconscious casualty to the board and safely remove the casualty from deep water.

In deep water (greater than 1m), working as a team, perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty using spinal equipment. Commence aftercare procedures

In shallow water (less than 1m), working as a team, perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty using spinal equipment. Commence aftercare procedures.

- Complete a 25m contact tow of an unconscious patient
- Work in a team to extract safely from the water
- Administer single rescuer CPR incorporating use of AED and then 2 rescuer CPR using supplemental oxygen via BVM to an adult manikin
- Once patient has regained consciousness, provide oxygen therapy until emergency services arrive.
- Manage oxygen equipment according to post-incident organisational procedures
- Participate in an incident debrief

Respond in a team of at least two lifeguards to a simulated hazardous and emergency scenario.

- Demonstrate fitness, strength, efficiency and speed throughout the rescue

Answer a series of theory questions (Multiple choice and short written questions) based on:
- Lifeguarding

- Aquatic supervision

- Supervision of specific aquatic environments
- Aquatic rescues
- Oxygen resuscitation and first aid
Assessment activity 21: Current Bronze Medallion
As a pre-requisite to the pool lifeguard qualification, all participants are required to have a copy of their current Bronze Medallion on file.
Assessment 22: Current First Aid
As a pre-requisite to the pool lifeguard qualification, all participants are required to have a copy of their current First aid on file.
