Bronze Medallion**

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is recognised as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. This award also increases employment opportunities with many pools and aquatic centres as they require employees who conduct aquatic programs to have their Bronze Medallion. This course will enhance participants' personal survival skills while providing them with the knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgment‚ technique, and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues.
The minimum age requirement is 14 years and participants should possess medium to advanced levels of aquatic fitness and skill. The Bronze Medallion's most challenging components include a 400m swim (continuously) to be completed within 13 minutes (100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke, 100m Sidestroke, 100m Survival Backstroke), and a 50m swim followed by 50m tow to be completed in under 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
The RLSSA Bronze Medallion Award needs to be renewed every 12 months.
The Bronze Medallion course offers nationally recognised certification and participants may be eligible for accreditation in:
  • SISCAQU020 Perform Water Rescues
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

Introduction:

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is recognised as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. This award also increases employment opportunities with many pools and aquatic centres as they require employees who conduct aquatic programs to have their Bronze Medallion. This course will enhance the participant's personal survival skills while providing them with the knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgment, technique, and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues.

Target Audience:

Participants must read and accept the terms and conditions of Royal Life Saving NT’s Code of Practice‚ which includes the details for refunds, cancellations, and course transfers. This is located on the website
https://rlssant.app.axcelerate.com/showDoc.cfm?DocID=423444

It is recommended that participants are 14 years of age in the calendar year they attempt the course. A medium level of aquatic fitness is required for some practical components of the Bronze Medallion.

- Communicate effectively with the rescuee, providing clear and concise instructions to the person being rescued.
- Identify and promptly respond to hazards and rescuee conditions that arise during the rescue.
- Remove the person from water safely, efficiently and engaging assistance when available and required.
- Demonstrate fitness and strength throughout the rescue.

Assessment activity 4:  Defensive techniques
  • Dressed in swimwear, trousers, and long-sleeved shirt, perform in deep water two of the following selected by the Assessor –
- A leg block,
- A block using an aid,
- A reverse.

Assessment activity 5:  Accompanied Rescue Scenario
  • A weak swimmer is in difficulty 12-metres from safety.  With a floatation aid, enter the water as for unknown conditions, wade 5-8-metres, throw the aid to the person, instruct the person on how to use the aid, accompany the person to safety and instruct the person on how to leave the water.
Assessment activity 6:  Non-Contact Tow Scenario
  • A week or injured swimmer is in difficulty in deep water 25-metres from safety: Swim to the person, demonstrating appropriate precautions. While returning to safety using an appropriate non-contact tow, demonstrate the method of coping with a struggling person. Land the person using a suitable method.
- Identify the signs of a person experiencing difficulty in the water.
- Identify any immediate hazards.
- Determine appropriate rescue method.
- Determine appropriate rescue equipment and effectively utilise rescue equipment suited to the type of rescue.
- Alert appropriate personnel and call for assistance.
- Communicate effectively with the rescuee, providing clear and concise instructions to the person being rescued.
- Identify and promptly respond to hazards and rescuee conditions that arise during the rescue.
- Remove the person from water safely, efficiently without assistance from another person.
- Demonstrate fitness and strength throughout the rescue.

Assessment activity 7:  Timed Tow
  • An unconscious, breathing person is 50-metres from safety.  Enter the water, swim a 50-metre approach, and tow the person 50-metres to safety.  The participant will commence the rescue wearing swimwear, trousers and long-sleeved shirt, any of which may be discarded as desired.  A time limit of 3 minutes and 15 seconds shall apply from the starting signal until the completion of the tow.

Assessment activity 10:  Recover and Resuscitate Scenario
  • Recover a person simulating unconsciousness from approximately 2-metres depth and tow 10-metres to shallow water or to safety: Assume that it is not possible to remove the person from the water until assistance arrives. Assess for respiratory failure and demonstrate rescue breathing for 1 minute. Once assistance arrives, land the person, and assess DRSABCD. Assume that signs of life are present and then place them in the recovery position.
- Identify the signs of a person experiencing difficulty in the water.
- Identify any immediate hazards.

Assessment activity 14:  Scenarios
  • Demonstrate initiative in effecting a rescue of two people who are in difficulty up to 15-metres from safety and whose conditions are unrevealed.  The Assessor will ensure that up to five rescue aids will be available.  The Assessor will brief the subjects on the roles to be simulated from the following
- non-swimmer,
- weak swimmer,
- injured swimmer,
- person with a suspected spinal injury,
