The Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard course offers professional training and qualification to participants 16 years and over and provides an entry-level qualification that can lead to an exciting career in the aquatic and recreation industry. Essential modules include: accident prevention‚ administration, public relations, education, rescue response and basic technical operations.

Pre-requisites include RLSSA Bronze Medallion and First Aid. A copy of these qualifications will be required before your booking can be confirmed.
 
The Pool Lifeguard course offers nationally recognised certification and participants may be eligible for accreditation in:
  • SISCAQU006 Supervise clients in aquatic environments
  • SISCAQU007 Perform advanced water rescues
  • PUAEME001 Provide emergency care
  • PUAEME003 Administer oxygen in an emergency 
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid (pre-requisite) or;
  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid (pre-requisite)
  • SISCAQU002 Provide basic water rescues (pre-requisite)

The Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Award is valid for 1 year from date of original course.

Participants must be 16 years of age. A medium level of aquatic fitness is required for some practical components of the Pool Lifeguard.

Participants must have a current First Aid and Bronze Medallion qualification.

Learning Methods:

Assessment activity 1:  Identify and respond to swimmer types
Identify and respond to all the following signs and signals
- Call for help
- Vertical body position
- Minimal or non-supportive leg action
- Vigorous arm movements
- Submerged or unconscious person
 
Assessment activity 2: Accompanied Rescue
Demonstrate correct swimming strokes‚ personal survival and rescue skills to perform a non-contact tow for 25m.
 
Assessment activity 3: Swim 200m – time limit 6 minutes
Swim 200 meters in less than 6 minutes without using equipment.
 
Assessment activity 4: Response time – Time limit 30 seconds
Respond to and reach a person in distress in the swimming pool within 30 seconds.
 
Assessment activity 5: Assisted lift of an unconscious casualty with a spinal board
Working in teams of two lifeguards, secure an unconscious casualty to the board and safely remove the casualty from the water.
 
 
Assessment activity 6: Timed tow – 25 meters of a conscious casualty – Time limit 1.45 minutes
25-meter swim and 25-meter non-contact tow of a conscious casualty with assisted landing in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds1
 
Assessment activity 7: Oxygen Checklist
Perform pre-use safety check of equipment and record any faults on the oxygen checklist including recover and restoring equipment.
 
Assessment activity 8: Oxygen Therapy
Working with oxygen equipment administer oxygen therapy to a conscious casualty, communicating to the casualty and providing reassurance and comfort.
 
Assessment activity 9: Adult CPR using oxygen equipment
Using oxygen equipment, perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilation) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
 
Assessment activity 10: Infant CPR using oxygen equipment
Using oxygen equipment, perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilation) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed a firm surface.
 
Assessment activity 11: Recover and resuscitate
A simulated drowning casualty is on the pool floor: enter the water from the poolside, recover the casualty, tow the casualty to the nearest support/exit, land the person, place the person in the recovery position, follow DRSABCD protocol, casualty is not breathing commence oxygen resuscitation for two minutes.
Note: if depth is greater than 3 meters assistance may be used e.g., fins
 
Assessment activity 12: Spinal Management – Vice Grip
In deep water (greater than 1m), working as a team, perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty using spinal equipment
 
Assessment activity 13: Spinal Management – Extended arm roll
In shallow water (less than 1m), working as a team, perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty using spinal equipment
 
 
Assessment activity 14: Hazardous Situations and Major emergency scenarios
Respond in a team of at least two lifeguards to a simulated hazardous and emergency scenario.
Perform a peer review on major emergency
 
 
 
Assessment activity 15: Incident report
Correctly document details of the major emergency scenario.
 
Assessment activity 16: Theory
Answer a series of theory questions (Multiple choice and short written questions) based on:
- Lifeguarding
- Risk management
- Aquatic supervision
- Communications
- Supervision of specific aquatic environments
- Aquatic rescues
- Oxygen resuscitation and first aid
 
Assessment activity 17: Current Bronze Medallion
As a pre-requisite to the pool lifeguard qualification, all participants are required to have a copy of their current Bronze Medallion on file.
 
Assessment 18: Current First Aid
As a pre-requisite to the pool lifeguard qualification, all participants are required to have a copy of their current First aid on file.
